Up2Us Endorses "Stronger New Castle" Democratic Slate

One of the fundamental goals of Up2Us is to support progressive Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. We are proud to endorse the Stronger New Castle slate for supervisor and board members for the town of New Castle. Many of us have been gathering signatures for Kristen Browde, Gail Markels, and Ivy Pool, as the signatures of registered Democrats are required in order to get them on the ballot in November. We are looking to activate the power of the Up2Us membership to get out the vote for both a primary (if a primary does occur) and the general election. In addition to their alignment with our core values, we are particularly impressed by their public policy credentials, government experience, management skills, municipal project management, environmental sensitivity, and fiscal responsibility. We love their passion for New Castle and their vision for its future. Above all, we welcome their understanding that the cornerstone of public service is respect for constituents, collaboration, and transparency. We all want our communities to be inclusive and embracing, and this slate is dedicated to those ideals. It is Up2Us to make our communities stronger by doing everything we can to elect progressive candidates like the Stronger New Castle slate.

URGENT: Calls to make on the Senate Healthcare Bill

The current version of the Senate Trumpcare bill is OUT. Stay tuned for analysis. Washington Post obtained a draft yesterday, and the bill is in multiple respects EVEN WORSE than the House bill, especially for people with preexisting conditions, seniors, low-income people, and women. Check out our post from yesterday for further information.

Remember, this is likely not the final bill, which McConnell wants to wait until the last moment to produce.

It's time to show up, speak out, and RESIST this bill like you never have before to save healthcare for millions of Americans. Lives are on the line. WHETHER YOUR REPS ARE DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS, CALL, FAX, PROTEST, minimally once a day. FLOOD YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDS WITH INFORMATION to get out the truth about this draconian bill and McConnell's antidemocratic process to ram this bill through secretively.

THERE IS NOTHING AS IMPORTANT AS HEALTHCARE OVER THE NEXT WEEK. At least 90% of everything you share on social media should have to do with healthcare.

GET YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY WITH THESE SENATORS, IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE ACCORDING TO CHUCK SCHUMER:
Dean Heller
Susan Collins
Lisa Murkowski
Shelley Moore Capito
Cory Gardner
Jeff Flake
Rob Portman
Ted Cruz
Rand Paul
Mike Lee
Ben Sasse
to call, fax, protest, do everything you can to stop this atrocity of a bill.

It's go time. Time to step up to the challenge. Stand together for (literally) "our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." Live the aspirations upon which our country was founded.

SCRIPTS to tailor for calls and faxes (text "resist" to 50409):

IF YOU HAVE REPUBLICAN SENATORS:
1) Demand that they vote no on Trumpcare, which will cause widespread loss of life, health, and livelihoods, as well as its upend a sixth of our economy.
2) Demand that they vote no on any bill that results in any people losing coverage, that ends any protections whatsoever for people with preexisting conditions, and/or that cuts Medicaid in any way, shape, or form.
3) Remind them that if they support any such bill, you will vote them out of office.
4) Demand that they hold public/open hearings for any bill related to healthcare, including Trumpcare. Demand that they show the American people the bill with sufficient time to read, understand, and comment on it. Remind them that their refusal to do so is nothing less than cowardice, cruelty, and undemocratic.

IF YOU HAVE DEMOCRATIC SENATORS:
1) Thank them for standing strong against Trumpcare.
2) Urge them to withhold consent and filibuster whenever possible to slow the Senate down. The longer we can draw this process out, the more attention we can draw to the travesty that is Trumpcare, and the less chance it has of passing.
3) Exhort them to use every opportunity to emphasize how horrific Trumpcare is and make their Republican colleagues feel the full force of their intention to strip healthcare from millions of people.
4) Urge them to filibuster by amendment during the vote-a-rama process. You can write your own amendment that Indivisible will deliver to them here:

New Yorkers: Ask Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to hold a Town Hall in NYC!

Neither Senator Schumer nor Senator Gillibrand have held a town hall in New York City since the election, but we know they have been working hard on behalf of New Yorkers and all Americans.

With so much under attack - immigrants, healthcare, public schools, the environment, civil and voting rights, FACTs and even our Democracy - we want to meet with (and hear from) our elected officials more than ever.

Up2Us is working with nine NY Metro area Indivisible groups to encourage both Senators to host an event during the Senate recess next week.

Join us in calling our Senators on Wednesday, May 24th.

Senator Schumer:

D.C.:  (202) 224-6542

NYC: (212) 486-4430

Binghamton: (607) 772-6792

Buffalo: (716) 846-4111

Peekskill: (914) 743-1532

Syracuse: (315) 423-5471

Rochester: (585) 263-5866

Melville: (631) 753-0978

Albany: (518) 431-4070

Senator Gillibrand:

D.C.: (202) 224-4451

NYC: (212) 688-6262

Syracuse: (315) 448-0470

Rochester: (585) 263-6250

Buffalo: (716) 854-9725

Albany: (518) 431-0120

LI:  (631) 249-2825

Hudson Valley: (212) 688-6262

Below is a suggested Script:

Hi, my name is…        and I’m a constituent from…       I’m calling  to ask the Senator to host a town hall in NYC during the upcoming Senate recess.

Will the Senator be holding any public events in NYC during the next recess?

If no:   Why not?

I believe that now, more than ever, it is essential for elected officials to hear directly from constituents in order to know what to prioritize back in DC. If not during this recess, when will the Senator hold a town hall in NYC?

the bloom art auction is tomorrow may 6 at 3pm

Join us tomorrow Saturday, May 6th at Chappaqua Station for a Charity Art Auction.  A preview catalog is available online HERE.  With starting bids as low as $15, anyone can find something!

In addition to the silent auction, raffle tickets will be available for purchase for $5 each (or 5 for $20) and refreshments can be purchased from the host cafe, Chappaqua Station.

The event is being called BLOOM, in honor of the phrase “Bloom where you are planted.”Up2Us was inspired to action when Hillary Rodham Clinton first shared this famous saying.  In the months following the election, Up2Us has grown to a 3700 member group with members working on political action, community support and progressive issues.

The art auction will feature pieces donated by local artists of all ages.  The silent auction will have items at all price points with proceeds benefiting the Pleasantville Community Garden and other area charities.  Admission is free and the BLOOM Auction is open to the public.  The Garden is dedicated to battling hunger in Westchester County where approximately 1 in 5 residents (200,000 people including many children) suffer from hunger and/or food insecurity.

The garden was created by Devin Juros in 2011 then an 11 year old student at Pleasantville Middle School.  To date, the organization has donated more than 34,000 pounds of fresh produce to 4 local organizations – Hillside Food Outreach, Pleasantville Interfaith Emergency Food Pantry, A-Home and Neighbor’s Link. More than 200 volunteers work with the organization annually including at least 60 kids from ages 5 through 18.

Up2Us is thrilled to be working with local artists and the Pleasantville Community Garden to bring this event to Chappaqua.  Selected pieces which will be available can be seen at https://www.up2us.us/bloom/  Up2Us always welcomes new members and like-minded organizations to join them.  For the most up to date samples and information, see the BLOOM page on Facebook.
